BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Alex Ruoff finished with a career-high 28 points as West Virginia pounded Auburn in the first Big Easy/SEC Challenge.
Three other Mountaineers scored in double figures as WVU improved to 6-1 on the year.
Joe Alexander had 18 points, Da’Sean Butler had 13 (on 6-of-6 shooting from the field) and Joe Mazzulla added 11.
West Virginia jumped all over the Tigers early, going up 21-4 in the first nine minutes of the game.
The Mountaineers led 44-27 at the break as Alexander and Ruoff led a blazing Mountaineer scoring attack by combining to hit 12-of-15 shots.
The lead grew to as much as 37 points, 80-43, before coach Bob Huggins emptied the bench with about five minutes left.
WVU hosts Duquesne Saturday at the Coliseum in Morgantown.
