Parade to honor Summers girls basketball team Monday

The state championship parade for the Summers County girls basketball team is set for 2:15 p.m. Monday, March 17, in downtown Hinton. There will also be a reception at the high school cafeteria from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. that evening.

Everyone is invited to stop in, share refreshments and congratulate the Bobcats, who defeated Lincoln 80-47 Saturday for their second consecutive Class AA championship.

YMCA School Swim League registration ends Sunday

Registration for the YMCA School Swim League continues through Sunday. The league is designed to introduce area children to competitive swimming.

WVU sweeps Valparaiso doubleheader

MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia baseball team finished with 18 runs on 21 hits to win both ends of a doubleheader, 7-2,in a seven-inning game and 11-8 in a nine-inning contest, against Valparaiso on Monday at Hawley Field.

In the first game, junior starter Josh Whitlock (3-0) went the distance, pitching seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking five. Elliott Gibbs (0-2) dropped his second decision of the season, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, striking out three batters and walking two.

In the nightcap, WVU (8-3) scored 11 runs on 13 hits and committed two errors, while Valparaiso (2-9) scored eight runs on 13 hits and committed one error.

Mountaineer pitcher Stephen Morrison (2-0) earned his second win of the season, pitching 7.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking six batters and striking out three. Chris Enourato (3) was credited with his third save of the season.

Beckley’s Jordon Yost doubled in a five-run WVU seventh inning.

The Mountaineers play a two-game series with St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Wednesday.
