NITRO — One bad spurt can sometimes set the tone for a game.

That was demonstrated on Monday night as Nitro defeated visiting Greenbrier East 101-64 in a Mountain State Athletic Conference game.

The Class AAA No. 4 ranked Wildcats improve to 14-3 while the AAA No. 8 ranked Spartans fall to 10-7.

The game was tied at 11-11 with 2:25 left in the opening quarter, but the Wildcats went on an 11-0 run to end the first period and break the contest open. Nitro led 53-24 at halftime.

“They didn’t play as well as I expected them to,” said Nitro coach John Wolfe of the Spartans. “I know they’re better than that. We were just clicking pretty good and they had a bad night. It happens to us too.”

Freshman guard Brittany Gordon paced the Wildcats offensively with 27 points. Sky Assif celebrated Senior Night with a 23 point effort for Nitro. Dri Nazario chipped in with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Olivia McCuskey added 13 points and Megan Hall pulled down 10 boards.

The Spartans were led by Katie Keaton who poured in 24 points, including five 3-pointers. The senior also pulled down nine rebounds. Senior forward Kelli Morgan contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for East.

Turnovers were aplenty for both squads. East had 24 turnovers while Nitro gave up 20.

“We tried to amp up the defense and trap a little bit,” said Wolfe. “We have some quickness and some length outside. We can get out and guard people.”

Greenbrier East plays host to George Washington tonight and Nitro travels to Parkersburg.
