W.Va. Miners Little League

workouts available

Starting Saturday and running the rest of the season, area Little League players ages 12 and under to 16 and under can schedule personal and team workouts with the Miners on all home dates from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.. Cost is only $30 per session, or five sessions for $100. The sessions will focus on pitching, hitting and fielding.

Wyoming County Open rescheduled

The Wyoming County Open has been rescheduled to June 24-25 at Clear Fork Valley Golf Course. It was originally set for June 10-11.

The tournament will be flighted after 18 holes, and a seniors division will be available upon request.

All golfers will be given a fried chicken dinner on the second day. There will be hole-in-one prizes, including a car.

Seth McClung Big Red Baseball Camp

The fourth annual Seth McClung Big Red Baseball Camp, hosted by Alderson Little League, will be held Tuesday, June 13, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Alderson City Park. The camp is free to all players.

There will be limited shirts and hats available for purchase, and the concession stand will be open.

McClung is a 1999 graduate of Greenbrier East High School and was chosen by Tampa Bay with the first pick of the fifth round of that year’s first-year players draft. He went on to pitch for the Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Beckley-Stratton cheerleading

The Beckley-Stratton Middle School cheerleading team will have conditioning drills this summer for incoming and current Beckley-Stratton students interested in cheer. The dates for the drills will be June 13, 14, 15; June 20 ,21, 22; and June 27, 28, 29 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the gym.

Park Middle School cross country

Park Middle School boys and girls cross country will begin summer training Monday, June 12. 

Players are to meet at 6 p.m. at the gazebo by the second parking lot of the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex. 

Summer training will be Monday through Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9-10:30 a.m. and will run two weeks. Future practice locations will be announced at practice. 

Students should wear appropriate jogging attire, running shoes and bring a water bottle or sports drink. 

A completed WVSSAC Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physician’s Certificate form, dated after June 1 is required.

Mount Hope Lions Club Golf Tournament

The annual Mount Hope Lions Club Golf Tournament will be Saturday, June 10, at Bridge Haven Golf Club. Golfers are to check in and register by 7:30 a.m. and the four-man scramble will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place finishes, closest to the pin on par-3 holes and longest drive. Door prizes will also be awarded by random drawing. There will be a $10,000 hole-in-one chance on hole No. 6.

Entry fee is $200 per four-man team and will include golf, cart and lunch.

Coach Jim Justice Basketball Skills Camp

The annual Coach Jim Justice Basketball Skills Camp is set for June 12-15 at Greenbrier East High School in Fairlea.

The Little Spartans camp for players going into the third through fifth grades will run from 9 a.m. to noon. The Spartans, for players going into the sixth through eighth grades, is set for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost of the four-day camp is $40 if preregistered. At the door, cost is $50.

Beckley-Stratton football will hold summer strength and agility training June 12, 14, 16, 19, 21 and 23 at the school from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each day.

Beckley-Stratton soccer

The Beckley-Stratton Middle School soccer team will hold summer drills June 26-30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex, Field 4. Players entering the sixth, seventh and eighth grades are encouraged to attend and need to bring a size 5 soccer ball, cleats and shin guards.

Players also need to have a physical, completed after June 1, in order to participate in practices.

Lady Bobcats Basketball Camp

The Lady Bobcats Basketball Camp, sponsored by the Hinton Youth Basketball League, will be June 19-23 at Summers County High School.

The camp is divided into two sessions in order to provide more specialized individual instruction. Sixth graders may choose to participate in the elementary session in the mornings or the middle school session in the afternoon. The elementary session, for girls entering grades 2-6 next year, will be held from 8:30 a.m. until noon each day.

The middle school session for girls entering grades 6-8 next year will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. each day. The cost of the camp is only $50. Each camper will receive a T-shirt and trophy at the completion of camp. There will also be age appropriate competition for awards and several prizes given away.

The camp is under the direction of Summers County basketball coach Sarah Blevins. Campers may register on the first day of camp or they may pre-register. Ron Kidd-YMCA Basketball Camps

Woodrow Wilson High School basketball coach Ron Kidd will be offering a fundamentals camp for grades 4-6 June 12-16 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

The fee will be $85 for non-members and $75 for members, and lunch will be included.

The team camp will be for grades 2-6 from June 19-21 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

John Flournoy basketball camp

The John Flournoy Youth League Basketball Camp will be held June 12-15 at Midland Trail High School.

It will be for ages kindergarten to sixth grade.

The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily Monday through Thursday.

The cost is $50 per camper ($55 walk-up). Each camper will receive insurance, a camp T-Shirt, individual instruction and be eligible for daily and weekly awards.

Instruction will be provided by the MTHS coaching staff as well as current and former area players and coaches. There will be daily guest speakers which include: John Flowers (former WVU player), Bob Williams (WVU Tech coach), and Mike Eades (NCAA referee).

The camp will consist of instruction on the fundamentals of basketball for the first three days and a day for putting it all together on Thursday. Awards will be awarded for “camper of the day” each day and to the winners of the daily competition.
