Tonight, the stadium fields at the YMCA Youth Sports Complex will be dark.

It’s the calm before the storm.

Region 3 semifinals are set for Charleston and Bluefield tonight, with the winners advancing to Thursday night’s finals at the YMCA’s Carter Stadium.

Thursday’s survivors advance to next week’s state tournament at Paul Cline Stadium.

Woodrow Wilson coach Rockey Powell wishes his team could always play at the YMCA.

“Anytime you play close to home, and have your home fans, it makes a difference,” he said. “We play on a larger field, and not too many fields are as big as we have. All that gives us an advantage.”

Second-rated Woodrow (14-1-3) plays No. 10 George Washington (14-4-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Schoenbaum Stadium in Coonskin Park.

Earlier in the season the Flying Eagles stunned the Patriots with three goals in the first 25 minutes en route to a 5-0 victory.

“I expect GW to be on their toes and come out very fast and very hard,” Powell said. There won’t be any big surprises this time.”

State player of the year candidate Joe Rodriguez leads Woodrow with 15 goals, including two in a 6-0 win over Oak Hill Thursday in the sectional final. All-state forward Chandler DeWese has 11 goals.

The defense, rebuilt from last year’s state runner-up squad, has been strong.

“We have young (sweeper Tony Serge, wing Jonah Moore and top reserve Aaron Dunbar, all sophomores) and old (stopper Adam Parkulo, defender Joseph Gramling and goalkeeper William Turner, each a senior) back there,” Powell said. “It’s a very good mix.”

n Oak Hill (7-8-4) is looking to pull a big upset when it takes on No. 7 George Washington (17-3-2) in the 5:30 game at Schoenbaum.

George Washington advanced to the regional by edging No. 1 Charleston Catholic 2-1 (4-3 shootout).

Oak Hill downed Nicholas County 2-0 Thursday. The Red Devils boast area scoring leader Heather Stevens (22 regular season goals). Kathleen Lively had eight.

n Also in girls action, No. 24 Bluefield (13-7-1) hosts No. 13 Woodrow Wilson (11-4-3) at 5:30 p.m. at East River Stadium.

The squads played each other the past three years, but not this season.

“They’ve really come on strong since the beginning of the season,” Woodrow coach Paulette Umberger said of the Beavers. “They’re a strong senior team (10 seniors) and we’re looking forward to playing them.”

Senior Madison Hayes and sophomore Stacey Rogers have scored 11 goals apiece for Bluefield, which defeated Wyoming East 2-0 and Princeton 2-1 in last week’s sectionals.

Sophomore Katy Carte scored eight regular season goals and had two last week in a 4-0 win over PikeView. Freshmen Kayla Rodriguez and Katelyn Dyke have seven and five goals, respectively.

“We’ve started working together a lot better,” Umberger said. “We’re winning the ball more than we were earlier in the season.”

n Tonight’s other game at East River features Shady Spring (3-6-1) against Greenbrier East (7-12).

Shady defeated PikeView 2-1 Thursday in a 3-2 shootout.

Bryce McDaniel scored the only regulation goal for the Tigers. Goalkeeper Justin Lester came up big in the shootout with three saves.

East upset No. 7 Princeton 4-3 Wednesday, also in a shootout.

Michael Prevett, who scored seven regular-season goals, had two in regulation against Princeton. Justin Stidom had the other Spartan goal.

East had fallen 3-1 and 4-2 to Princeton in the regular season.

The Spartans and Shady Tigers did not meet in the regular season.
