Tigers’ win streak snapped

Shady Spring had its consecutive dual meet win streak snapped at 35 when Braxton County edged the Tigers, 39-37, in a wrestling tri-match at Nicholas County High School Thursday.

In the earlier matches, Shady downed Nicholas County, 54-22, and Braxton beat the Grizzlies, 66-24.



Oak Hill wrestling match postponed

OAK HILL — Oak Hill’s season-opening quad match with Gilbert, Webster County and Richwood at Collins Middle School Thursday was canceled due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been set for the match.

The Red Devils will now open the wrestling season Saturday at the Cabell Midland Duals in Ona.



Youth wrestling signups scheduled

Beckley Central Youth Wrestling will be holding signups at Park Middle School gym from 6 to 7 p.m. today.

Joe Wickline and Matt Epling are running the program this season.

Elks Hoop Shoot Saturday at Woodrow

Local competition for the 31st annual Elks Hoop Shoot, a national free throw shooting contest for youngsters ages 8-13, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Woodrow Wilson High School gym. Registration is from 9-10 a.m.

Age categories for boys and girls are 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores will advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals at Springfield, Mass. Parents must bring their child’s birth certificate to the registration. Players must wear the proper type of shoes for the basketball court.

Indoor soccer league forming at YMCA

The Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA is accepting teams from 8-under through Adult to compete in its indoor soccer league.

Games will be played through February at the old Shady Spring Junior High. An end-of-season tournament will be held. For more information or to inquire about fees call 252-0715 or stop by the Welcome Center at the YMCA.
