CHARLESTON — Jimmy Barton’s game-high 20 points led Independence to a 79-47 win over Calhoun County Friday in the Hoops Classic at the Charleston Civic Center.

Josh Buchanan added 14 points for the Patriots. John Snuffer grabbed 10 rebounds and Bryce Shiflett had eight assists.

Independence (2-0) plays at Fayetteville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The game will be played on the new floor at Fayetteville High School.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Jeff Johnson’s game-high 20 points helped Mount Hope defeat MSU Academy in the championship game of the Meadow Bridge holiday tournament.

Jamel Shelton added 14 points for the Mustangs.

Four players scored in double figures for MSU Academy. Tres Caldwell led the way with 13, followed by Philip Misiti with 12, John Austin with 11 and Ben Rucker with 10.

Mount Hope (2-0) takes on Sherman in the Valley holiday tournament Monday. The Falcons (1-1) host Greater Beckley Christian at 3 p.m. today.

Cotten finished with 15 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Wheeler pumped in 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Stephanie Nickell contributed 11 points, eight steals and two assists to the Pirates’ effort and Casey Smith added 11 points.

Montcalm’s Eva Grose topped all scorers with 21 points. Sheena Johnson added 14 to the Generals’ total.
