LINDSIDE — Jason Jackson rushed for 202 yards on 24 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead the James Monroe Mavericks to a 41-28 win over the Bluefield Beavers at a rainy, windswept, and muddy H.E. Comer Field.

The talented senior tallied 173 of his yards in the second half. Jackson also gained yards in large chunks on key plays that would prove decisive.

He put the Mavericks in the lead for good with a four-yard run that he set up himself with a 45-yard gain.

“The second half I think we switched things around trying to change the defense around,” Jackson explained. “I had to take more of the weight. We started to lose people and I just had to take more of the weight.”

A bad extra-point snap kept the lead at six. The Beavers tried to respond and retake the lead, but on a fourth-and-one on the Mavericks’ 26 with 3:50 to go, Bluefield quarterback Eric McClanahan bobbled a wet, muddy ball on the snap and was easily stopped for no gain.

On the next play, Jackson broke a 70-yard run to the Beavers’ four. He scored his fifth touchdown of the night on the next play to effectively end the game and possibly the Beavers’ playoff chances.

“They found a little weakness in our defense and did a nice job of exploiting that in the second half and we never did stop them,” dejected Bluefield head coach Fred Simon noted. “That’s the way it goes. That’s the way it goes.”

Each Bluefield touchdown in the first half was answered by a score from James Monroe. J.T. Powell’s five-yard run was answered by a 49-yard scamper by Ernie Tincher. McClanahan’s one-yard plunge was answered by Jackson’s two-yard plunge.

The Beavers seemed to gain a stable foothold on top at the end of the first half when Bluefield put together a four-minute, 60-yard march that culminated in McClanahan’s second rushing touchdown, this one from 14 yards away.

But James Monroe came back again to tie the score before the break. The key play of the drive was a 31-yard pass from Taylor Robertson to Tincher. Two plays later, Jackson plunged from one yard out for his second TD of the game.

“They got ahead of us there and we’d come back and tie it and they’d get ahead and we’d come back and tie it and they’d get ahead and we’d come back and tie it,” Mavericks head coach David Witt said. “We just looked like it was going to do that all night long.”

Jackson scored his third touchdown to give the Mavericks their first lead of the evening, but that was answered by a one-yard plunge by Allen Carter. Powell led the Beavers with 158 yards on 19 carries.
