CHARLESTON — Pardon Greenbrier East coach Jerry Bradley if he considers the Charleston Civic Center a house of horrors for his Spartans.

After all, they’ve been beaten three times by Huntington area teams their last three times on the state’s big stage. And they were lopsided monsters at that — 73-29 to Cabell Midland in the state tournament, 52-35 to Spring Valley in last year’s Hoops Classic and 52-30 to Spring Valley again Friday in this year’s Hoops Classic.

“We scored 30 points; I guess we’re getting better,” Bradley joked. “We’re young and we knew we were going to struggle on offense.”

Often times the struggling took on long stretches, and as a result, Spring Valley was able to outlast the Spartans and win going away.

“We just don’t have that go-to guy right now,” Bradley said. “Let’s face it, you aren’t going to score 30 points and win many games. But I can’t fault my team’s effort. I thought we played hard, especially on defense. I saw enough to have some confidence that we are going to get better.”

East’s opening-game lapses started early as they fell behind 14-2 to Spring Valley (2-0), which was playing its second game.

From there, it was an uphill climb.

Drew Workman tried to keep the Spartans in it, with a three in the second that cut a one-time 16-point deficit to 10, 21-11.

Down by 10 at the half, 29-19, Workman again hit a three to cut the lead to six.

But another long run by Spring Valley, 9-0, kicked the lead back to 15.

Spring Valley ended it with an 11-0 run in the fourth.

“We’re inexperienced, we’re going to have streaks like that,” Bradley said. “I do think the difference between where we are now and where we’ll be in March will be the biggest improvement since I’ve been here.”

Derek Simmons led Spring Valley with 11.

Greenbrier East’s Workman led all scorers with 13.
