Thumbs up ... to those who attended a special holiday concert at Woodrow Wilson High School sponsored by the Raleigh County Board of Education and the Raleigh County Music Educators. Teachers performed the music and the public donated 338 nonperishable food items for a local food pantry and $300 to the Joe Wright Memorial Fund.



Thumbs up ... to Coal City Elementary School students who took a stand against domestic violence by participating in a Penny War and raising $565.07 in only a week for the Women’s Resource Center.



Thumbs down ... to West Virginia after a national study reported the state continues to lag behind in the amount of money spent on anti-smoking campaigns for minors.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids said West Virginia’s spending ranks it 29th in the nation, down from 22nd last year.



Thumbs up ... to Raleigh General Hospital medical staff vice president Anthony Dinh, M.D., who presented a check from his RGH medical staff colleagues to Linda Lugar, executive director of the United Way of Southern West Virginia. The hospital’s medical staff contribution pushed Raleigh General’s total contribution to more than $50,000 for this year.



Thumbs up ... to deer hunters in West Virginia who harvested 66,570 bucks during the recent two-week buck season. The 2007 buck harvest was slightly higher than the 2006 harvest of 66,115.



Thumbs down ... to whoever is making scam calls to Raleigh County residents telling them they have won a free new car and they just needed to bring two forms of identification and proof of vehicle insurance and pick up their new cars at a local dealership.



Thumbs up ... to Ameha Broyles of Cumberland, Va., formerly of Northfork, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.



Thumbs up ... to the Citizen Conservation Corps of West Virginia, which, in conjunction with Beckley Elementary’s Reading Challenge, has launched a book drive in honor of Martin Luther King Educational Service Awareness Day to collect books for the local K-5 school.



Thumbs up ... to Terry Fischer, a 16-year veteran firefighter, chosen as the Beckley Fire Department’s 2007 Firefighter of the Year.
