Following right along with the script, Cinderella’s ride turned back into a pumpkin early Friday morning when a last-second shot by Texas guard Kenton Paulino swished through a basketball net in Atlanta and ended a storybook run by West Virginia’s Fantastic Five.

For many decades, WVU basketball glory was always tied into the names of Jerry West, Hot Rod Hundley, Rod Thorn and a host of others. Those guys deserved it, they will always be remembered and will never be forgotten.

But the past two seasons, led by a Martinsburg kid who grew up in similar means to that guy from Cabin Creek (or some would argue Chelyan), Mountaineer basketball took center stage and won over the hearts of many across this nation.

Thirty years from now, we promise you, the kids from today will be still talking about Kevin Pittsnogle, Mike Gansey, Johannes Herber, Patrick Beilein and J.D. Collins.

What a wonderful run they have made since February 2005. The thrills and excitement they have given us will be around forever.

You might say forever is a long time, but people don’t forget “TEAMS,” and that’s exactly what this group symbolized.

In this day and age of everybody for him or herself, five kids from various backgrounds came together and showed us all what can be accomplished with teamwork.

Not only a lesson in athletics, but a lesson in life.

We say “Thank You” to these gold and blue legends. You’ve been good for us all and you did us proud.
