I am writing in regard to an article written by Cody Neff last year. It was titled “Area Near Blue Jay reportedly haunted.”

The way I understand was that there had been a coal mine up on the hill to the left on C&O Dam Road. The mine was called Top Seam. The mine had worked out and ceased operation. They had built company houses which they rented to anyone. When I was a baby, my mom and dad rented one of them. This was about 1934.

They hadn’t lived there very long until one night my dad hadn’t gone to sleep yet and he heard something that sounded like you would take an empty coffee can and hold up a grain of corn and drop it in the can. Then what sounded like a baby crying would start. It would go on until it seemed to lose its breath. It would catch its breath and start again for a while.

Dad got up and looked around, but didn’t see anything. It happened again once while my mom was still awake and she heard it also. They moved out soon after that. I do know they heard something. I heard my parents tell about it many times. The story back then was a woman who lived there had killed her infant child by raising a window and placed her baby in the opening. Then she dropped the window on the baby and killed it. I think the house burned soon after that. I know they heard something that was never explained.
