Thumbs up ... to Brenda Browning, this year’s Wyoming County Teacher of the Year. Now in her 21st year, she teaches second- graders at Pineville Elementary.



Thumbs up ... to Ghent Elementary, Trap Hill Middle and Liberty High, first place winners in the 2005-06 Raleigh County Schools “Most Attractive Campus” Contest. Campuses are judged each spring on if the grounds are free of debris; lawns, shrubs and trees are cut and trimmed neatly; new or creative landscaping; and evidence of previous workmanship.



Thumbs up ... to Wyoming County commissioners for contributing $1,000 to the Wyoming County Toy Fund. Now in its seventh year, the annual project has served about 15,000 children.



Thumbs up ... to Shade Tree Car Club for making a $1,000 donation to the patients at Pinecrest Hospital. For the past four summers, Shade Tree Car Club’s final show of the season has been staged on the spacious grounds of Pinecrest Hospital.



Thumbs down ... to the University of Wisconsin, which is demanding that 20 high schools across the nation, including Westside in Wyoming County and Weir in Weir County, stop using a “W” logo designed similarly to the university’s. While marketing officials say the logo is a symbol of a school’s integrity and the value of its degrees, it’s not likely that anyone is going to confuse the Westsiders with the Badgers. If Wisconsin is dead set on forcing changes, perhaps they should have to pay for new helmets and other logoed equipment or uniforms that will have to be altered.



Thumbs up ... to the Upper Guyandotte Watershed Association’s third annual appliance and scrap metal collection, which garnered nearly 50 tons of junk appliances, cars, lawnmowers, bicycles, water heaters, and other scrap during the three-day event at the Mullens Opportunity Center.

Browning, 1957; Jean Walker Lusk, 1959; Dr. Donald Gene Johnson, 1967; Paula Lecco Fleenor, 1970; Sandra K. Paynter Lusk, 1975; Dr. Shirley Louise Stewart Burns, Ph.D., 1989; Dr. Barry Scott Brown, 1991; along with deceased alumni Billie Beane Lively, 1955; and William G. “Will” Stewart, 1972.
