A tractor-trailer driver is dead after a fiery crash early Monday morning on Interstate 77.

The accident occurred at 12:35 a.m. in the southbound lane at mile marker 41, just before the I-77/I-64 split.

The initial call came in as a tractor-trailer fire.

“A flatbed truck overturned in the median spilling its load of industrial metal parts,” Cpl. C.K. Morton, with the West Virginia State Police Turnpike detachment, said. The parts spilled across the median and into the northbound lane.

Morton said another vehicle traveling the turnpike hit a piece of the spilled metal, causing a second accident. The driver of that vehicle was transported to a local hospital.

“It was a single-vehicle accident initially, but later involved another car because of the spill of the cargo,” Morton said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was dead on the scene, Morton said. He was from Hubbard, Ohio.

Morton said the tractor-trailer did catch fire after the accident.

The initial cause of the crash is still under investigation, Morton said.
