Shots rang out at two Beckley apartment complexes early Friday morning, and a warrant has been issued for a man’s arrest in the second shooting.

The Beckley Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of Stephen Burks, 29, of Stanaford, Sgt. J.L. McDaniel said. He is described as a black man, 5-foot-10 with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen driving a blue car.

At 6:53 a.m. Friday, Cpl. J.G. Martin and Patrolman J.L. Wall were dispatched to Wilbrian Apartments at 510 Ewart Ave., McDaniel said. A woman told police her boyfriend called to tell her he got into a fight with Burks, and Burks threatened to go to her apartment and shoot her and members of her family.

The woman then fled her apartment for a neighbor’s when she saw a blue car and heard shots fired, McDaniel said. No one saw the person firing the gun or who was inside the car.

Later, another woman at a complex in the 200 block of Antonio Avenue called police, saying she let a friend borrow her car, McDaniel said. She watched from her window as the friend was bringing it back, and she heard three shots ring out. She then said she saw Burks standing in the lot yelling a threat and using swear words. She then saw Burks drive away in a blue car. The shooting busted out a car’s back glass.

At this scene, police recovered three shell casings and one 9 mm bullet, McDaniel said. They only found one bullet hole on Ewart Avenue.

The wanton endangerment warrant is for the Antonio Avenue incident, McDaniel noted. No warrants have been issued for Burks’ arrest for the Ewart Avenue incident.

Anyone with any information about Burks’ whereabouts is encouraged to call the Beckley Police Department at 256-1707 or Crime Stoppers at 255-7867.
