The Ghent Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to reports of a boat fire near the gas pumps at Flat Top Lake.

The fire on the 2006 Stingray pleasure craft was reported at 3:42 p.m.

Assistant fire chief Eric Guy said the boat’s owner had just fueled up and was leaving the pumps when he noticed smoke.

Guy said the owner pulled away from the pumps and saw smoke and fire coming from the boat’s engine.

Although Guy said firefighters were on the scene within nine minutes, the fire, which is believed to have been caused by a mechanical problem, had already “self-extinguished.”

Guy said the boat was still “floatable” and estimated the damage to be about $800.

No injuries were reported.
