Designer pets are out of fashion this season — this spring, it's all about the adorable, adoptable fur babies.

During a two-month campaign called "Adoption is the New Black," volunteers at Operation Underdog are encouraging prospective pet parents to adopt a furry friend in need of a forever home.

Anyone who applies for and successfully completes an adoption between March 28 and May 28 will receive a free black Operation Underdog T-shirt with a white "Adoption is the New Black" logo on the back.

"We're always trying to think of how to make adoption better and more appealing to people in the area," said volunteer Elizabeth Raney. "We wanted people to think of adoption as 'being in style' when adding a new pet into the family."

She said most of the adoptable animals are good with children, other pets and come fully vetted.

"Our adoption fee is $100, which includes alter, vaccination, microchip, heart worm test and current heart worm preventive. It's actually cost saving because it covers so much vetting."

Raney said adopting from a shelter saves a life, enriches the life of the adoptive family and opens a space for the shelter to try and rescue another dog.

She encourages people to set aside their preconceived notions about what kind of dog is their favorite breed, shape, color or size.

"Sometimes the perfect dog is found in an unperfect one. I've bought pets before, but when I started fostering a dog no one else wanted, I fell in love. I thought I only liked a certain type, but I opened my heart, and it didn't matter what the dog looked like or the outside characteristics at all."
