The Coal Preparation Society of America (CPSA) has named Art Sanda of Hinton as executive director.

With nearly 40 years’ experience in the coal industry, Sanda began his career in Boston metropolitan dailies as a financial news and police and court reporter and held public relations positions in the energy and marine transportation industries, becoming manager of public relations and government affairs for Eastern Associated Coal Corp. and then editor-in-chief and associate publisher of Coal Age magazine.

Presently, he continues as contributing editor of Coal People magazine.

As its first executive director, Sanda will be concentrating on broadening the society’s services to its members, in developing new communications and technical programs and workshops for those in the industry, and increasing CPSA membership.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, CPSA was founded in 2002 with the avowed mission of increasing the knowledge of coal preparation. With more than 1,200 members, today it is the world’s largest professional society dedicated to the coal preparation industry.

The society elected a new slate of officers and increased its board of directors from six to 11 members at its annual meeting held in conjunction with the 2012 International Coal Prep Conference and Exhibition in Lexington Ky.

Elected to two-year terms of office were president, Robert W. Hollis, vice president preparation for James River Coal Co.; vice president, R. Hunter Davis, manager of coal preparation for Alliance Coal LLC, and treasurer, Michael Ferguson, vice president Taggart Global LLC. Barbara Arnold, president of PrepTech Inc., was re-elected to a two-year term as secretary.

Elected to serve on the board of directors for three-year terms were Peter Bethell, senior processing consultant to Arch Coal Inc. and other coal-related companies; Greg DeHart, director of coal preparation for Arch Coal Inc.; Al Deurbrouck, formerly of the Department of Energy; Rick Honaker, chair and professor at the University of Kentucky, Mining Engineering; Jack Hopwood, director of sales for FLSmidth Krebs; Mel J. Laurila, president of Quality Control Inc., and Richard Whitt, president of TriDet Laboratories Inc.
