An individual jumped to his death from the New River Gorge Bridge Monday afternoon.
The suicide happened around 4 p.m., when the man jumped, falling 876 feet into the New River Gorge. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We really don’t release information when something like this happens,” said Capt. Jim Sizemore of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
Sizemore said the department handles three to four fatal bridge suicides annually.
Not all situations have a fatal ending, though. In early November crisis negotiators talked with a man for more than two hours before he allowed rescue personnel to drop down and bring him to safety.
