A Greenbrier County woman was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail for stealing prescription drugs from her work place.

Hayley Renee Casto, 20, of Lewisburg, was indicted in June on embezzlement charges and possession of a controlled substance. Both charges were dismissed after Casto pleaded guilty to petit larceny in a plea deal brokered between Lewisburg lawyer Pat Via and the state.

Assistant prosecutor Bryan Bragg said Casto was employed at a local pharmacy and stole nearly 3,500 prescription pills, mainly codone, between December 2006 and March 2007.

Casto did not steal money, Bragg said, but the cost of the pills — valued at $1,871 — triggered the embezzlement charge.

Chief Circuit Judge James J. Rowe sentenced Casto to a year in jail, but ordered her to be discharged after serving only 30 days.

Casto had no previous criminal record and said she was undergoing drug counseling for a habit which included taking “20 to 30 pills” a day.
