The name of the Saturday boating victim has been released by New River Gorge National River Chief Ranger Jeff West.
Eddie Ramsey Sr., 60, of Edmond, died during a boating accident around 7 p.m. Saturday on New River.
West said Ramsey, originally of Nuttallburg, had lots of experience on the river.
As he and his son were ferrying camping gear across the river in a jon boat to their camp near Short Creek above a rapid known as Double Z, their boat filled with water and capsized, according to West.
West said neither men were wearing a life jacket, but Ramsey’s son was able to make it to shore. The family saw the father struggling, went back into the water and pulled him to shore, but he was unresponsive.
A passing rafter stopped to assist and began CPR until EMS arrived about 20 minutes later, but West says they were unable to revive him.
The jon boat has been located and Ramsey’s body has been transferred to the state medical examiner for autopsy.
