A former Fayette County resident working at a Richmond, Calif., landfill was killed Wednesday after he fell into the tracks of his bulldozer.

Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy Dave O’Brien identified the man as Morris Blair, 64, formerly of Mount Carbon.

Dean Fryer, spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, said Blair had been a Contra Costa County employee and was operating the bulldozer at the time of the accident.

“The employee was operating a Caterpillar bulldozer with metal tracks and had stopped the bulldozer. While he was coming out of the cab, he attempted to step onto a platform and his foot hit a lever that put the bulldozer into reverse,” Fryer said Friday. “He immediately attempted to jump back into the cab and slipped and his foot got caught between the platform and the metal track, and the track pulled him in and he was run over by the bulldozer.”

Blair had been operating the bulldozer at the Contra Costa County Sanitary Landfill at the time of the incident, Fryer said.

A state investigation has begun and must be completed within six months under California law.
