Before the leaves turn brown and fall from West Virginia’s hillsides, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito is expected to say if she intends to challenge Sen. Robert C. Byrd next year.

Byrd, a political icon, mustered his old-time campaign style Tuesday for a rousing announcement at the state Capitol of his bid to land a ninth term in the Senate.

In the aftermath, speculation has heightened about Capito, but an aide said Wednesday the Republican congresswoman is within a few weeks of making her intentions known.

“There will still be foliage in the trees,” aide R.C. Hammond said.

Already, the GOP race is becoming crowded, with several potential candidates announcing, but only one, Hiram Lewis, actually has filed his papers.
