A Best Ambulance substation in Raleigh County is being called a total loss after a Thursday night fire.

At 8:04 p.m., firefighters from Coal City and Sophia City fire departments were called to the Best Ambulance substation in the 1700 block of Coal City Road, Capt. Ryan Bragg of the Coal City Fire Department said. The substation — a single-wide trailer — was fully engulfed in the living room when they arrived.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but the substation was a total loss, Bragg said. Fire damage was evident on all ceilings and on most walls, and smoke damage was highly prevalent.

Two ambulance crews worked in the trailer 24 hours a day, Bragg said. Both crews were out on calls when the fire was reported. Everything inside was ruined — ambulance equipment, personal belongings and all major appliances.

Temporarily, Best Ambulance will work from Coal City Fire Department’s building next door, Bragg said. Bragg also complimented Ghent EMS, which sent a crew to help.
