Several members of the Heart of God Ministries congregation were recognized Tuesday night at Beckley Common Council for their efforts during an Earth Day cleanup.

“Of all the groups we had for Earth Day cleanups, Heart of God had the most trash collected, and the most volunteers who came out,” said Danielle Stewart.

Janine Bullock, Councilwoman of Ward V, commended Heart of God’s Bishop Fred Simms for being an outstanding servant and leader in his community.

“He has trained his congregation the same,” Bullock said. “I am so grateful for all of you coming out on a Saturday at 8 a.m.”

Mayor Rob Rappold, too, acknowledged Simms for his community service and the work of his congregation.

In other news, the city received one bid for a new recycling truck — $88,389 from West Virginia Tractor Company.

Mayor Rappold said $50,000 of the cost is being covered by a grant that is already in hand.
