The next phase of the Z-Way project is expected to be complete Aug. 6, confirmed Brent Walker, spokesman for the Department of Transportation.

The portion of the project will connect Stanaford Acres to Robert C. Byrd Drive at Beckley Plaza.

The original completion date was May 2016, but despite the revised date, work remains under way.

Walker said the delay occurred because of typical problems that arise during large construction projects.

“We had typical problems with right-of-way acquisition and utility relocations which are currently under way,” he said.

The project also hit a slight snag when asbestos testing and remediation at a property set for demolition had to be addressed.

Walker said those delays have been remedied and the demolition of the former Sonic restaurant could move forward at any time.

“Snags occur, but those delays are not costing taxpayers. During construction season sometimes there are delays, and so we work through them the best we can. It is going to be a nice addition as we continue moving forward.

The $18 million project was awarded to Michael Enyart and Sons Inc. of Ohio.

Once complete, the Beckley-Raleigh County Transportation Authority is expected to move forward with discussions about the next phase, which goes through Beaver, Daniels and Shady Spring toward Hinton.
