Insight on immigrants

Students from Greater Beckley Christian School listen Thursday as Kathaleen-Kirk Mooney, a member of Friends of the Library, presents a lesson on the history of Ellis Island. The special exhibit, “Ellis Island: The Golden Door,” was brought to the library by the Friends and it provides insight into the details of how many immigrants came to America, passing through the island. Mooney said the satin panels of the exhibit are rich in the history of the island. From 1892 to 1954, over 12 million immigrants entered the United States through Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. While the national Ellis exhibit concludes this morning, a Wall of Honor dedicated to Raleigh County immigrants will remain on display. Mooney said it features Raleigh County families who can link their history to Ellis Island, listing their country of origin, province and years of arrival. Mooney added that it is surprising to see how many local families can be traced back to Ellis Island. For more information, call the library at 304-255-0511.
