Bill Stewart dies of heart attack at 59
Legislators in both Charleston and the nation’s capital joined fellow West Virginians and officials at West Virginia University in shock and sadness Monday at the sudden passing of former Mountaineer football coach Bill Stewart in a golf outing at Stonewall Jackson Resort.

7 millionth visitor is celebrated at Tamarack
Marlene Powers, looking pretty in pink and hailing from Elberton, Ga., walked through Tamarack’s front doors with her husband, Roy Powers, around 10:45 a.m. Monday, becoming the arts center’s 7 millionth guest.

They were greeted by Secretary of Commerce Keith Burdette, Tourism Commissioner Betty Carver and Tamarack General Manager Cheryl Hartley. Burdette presented the excited couple with a key to the city and Hartley awarded them a $1,000 Tamarack gift certificate. -

Tigers pound Mavericks
Shady Spring’s Drew Green gets out of the way of a high pitch during the Tigers’ 13-3, five-inning win over James Monroe Monday in the Class AA Region 3 semifinals in Shady Spring. The Tigers will visit Wyoming East at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for the region championship and berth in next week’s state tournament.
The longball was in full effect Monday in Shady Spring.
