Thousands of tires were culled from Wyoming County through the efforts of several agencies and residents under the direction of Commissioner Silas Mullins.
An April 19 tire drive, sponsored by the Wyoming County Solid Waste Authority and Commission, was a huge success, according to Mullins.
“People responded from all around Wyoming County,” Mullins noted. “Over 7,000 tires were collected from mountains, hollows, creeks, streams, and roadsides.”
Larry Mitchell collected more than 500 tires from Windom Mountain Hollow and Indian Creek.
Josh Powers, a student at Westside High, collected 327 tires and Chad Jackson, at student at Wyoming County East High, turned in 207 tires, Mullins noted.
This was one of the largest tire collection events in Wyoming County history, according to state Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) officials.
REAP is a program of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. The program provides oversight of litter removal, statewide recycling, and open dump cleanups across West Virginia.
“I personally would like to thank all the adults and students who took an active part in this record-setting event,” Mullins emphasized.
“You have made a difference and our county is a better place today because of your efforts,” he noted.
Mullins obtained a state grant to assist with the costs associated with the event.
