Beavers land pair on Class AA All-State team

Bluefield High School finished up the 2012 football season with a 9-3 record and was well rewarded on the Class AA All-State Football Team, announced today.

Running back Montell Leggett was a first team pick as a running back, while D.J. Edwards made the first team squad as a defensive back. Another defensive back, Johnny David, was named the captain of the second team defense, and Justin Mariotti was the second team kicker.

The other area standout on the Class AA first team was River View defensive lineman Brandon Thomas.

Wyoming East’s Jacob Summe was a second team running back, while Independence’s Harold Messenger was a second team offensive lineman. Second team defensive players from the area were defensive lineman Austin Hill (Nicholas County) and defensive back Isaiah Brown (Summers County).

Special mention went to Chris Cecil (Wyoming East), Justin Cogar (Westside), Corey Coppola (Bluefield), Shadeed Fitzgerald (Bluefield), Joey Lacek (Liberty), Wil Mayes (Nicholas County), T.J. Smith (Summers County), Aaron Tolliver (Independence), E.T. Weiss (James Monroe) and Jordan Wilson (River View).

Tyler Blankenship (River View), Maurice Brown (Mount View), Christian Hedinger (Wyoming East), Danny Miller (Bluefield), Hunter Moses (PikeView), Mike Mullens (Westside), Dystyn Murphy (Nicholas County) and Tyler Myers (Bluefield) all received honorable mention.

Back-to-back state champion Wayne placed four players on the first team in running back Brandon Spurlock, the captain, quarterback Grant Ferguson, offensive lineman Anthony Bryant and linebacker Mason Hodge.

Spurlock ran for 2,003 yards and 28 touchdowns, while Ferguson completed 63 of 188 passes for 1,211 yards and 17 touchdowns. He toossed just one interception.

Robert C. Byrd linebacker Jermodd Garrett was the defensive captain. He recorded 172 tackles and 16 sacks in helping the Eagles finish 11-2.
