Bob Huggins already has his work cut out for him, putting his youthful West Virginia University basketball team up against the like of Kansas, Baylor and Kansas State in Big 12 play, but the head Mountaineer isn’t going to take it easy on his squad in the nonconference slate, either.
WVU released its nonleague games Thursday, and included in the action are a Nov. 12 trip to Spokane, Wash., to face Gonzaga, the same team that knocked the Mountaineers out of the NCAA Tournament in March, and another to West Lafayette, Ind., where WVU will meet up with a talented Purdue squad Jan. 19.
WVU will play in the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival, going up against Michigan, and former Mountaineer head coach John Beilein, in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 15.
WVU will also play three games in Orlando, Fla., as part of the Old Spice Classic Nov. 22-25. Vanderbilt, Gozaga, Clemson, Davidson, Marist, Oklahoma and UTEP will all be a part of that tournament field, and the Mountaineers will play three games over four days.
Duquesne will host WVU in Pittsburgh on Dec. 11, and the Mountaineers will battle Marshall in the annual Capital Classic on Dec. 5 in Charleston.
There will also be some tough competition visiting Morgantown before the end of 2012. VMI, Virginia Tech, Oakland, Radford and Eastern Kentucky will all make the trip to the Coliseum.
Fans’ first glimpse of the 2012-13 Mountaineer squad will come Nov. 5, when Glenville State visits Morgantown for an exhibition contest.
