Three area Class AA girls basketball teams made the trip to Charleston for the annual state tournament this year, and each was recognized for those efforts with a player on the Class AA first-team all-state list.

Westside’s Hope Lester, Nicholas County’s Shealyn Shafer and PikeView’s Hope Nester took three spots on the eight-member squad, which was released Wednesday night.

Lester led the Renegades to a 25-2 mark and a runner-up finish this season. The sophomore center averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds as a dominating force in the paint.

Shafer was a Class AAA pick last year, but had an even stronger season this year at the AA level. The senior center averaged 20.5 points, 12.3 boards, 5.1 steals and 3.2 assists as the Grizzlies advanced to the state semifinals before ending the season at 21-4.

Nestor, a junior guard, tallied 14.9 points, 2.6 assists and 2.7 steals this season en route to a 14-11 record for the Panthers and a trip to the state tourney, where they lost to Westside in the opening round.

Captaining the first team is Bridgeport’s Miki Glenn.

One of the top players in the state, regardless of classification, Glenn earns the honor for the second-straight year, having captained the Class AAA first team last season.

“That’s pretty special, isn’t it,” Bridgeport coach Dave Marshall said. “It’s so rare to happen as an underclassman, at least as far as my following the game over the last 20 years. Obviously, if you get it your underclassman year, there’s a much better chance of getting it when you get to be that senior. It really just speaks to who Miki is, and what she’s accomplished.”

Glenn herself was humbled by being chosen as a captain again.

“It’s something special,” Glenn said. “It’s not like that happens every day or every year for some people. But, to be considered the top player in your division is definitely something special, and I thank God every day for giving me the skills I need to be successful in my life.”

All the Indians’ senior point guard did this season was take a team that had been gutted by graduation and injury and lead it to a 25-2 record and a state title — the first girls basketball title in the school’s history. That, while becoming Bridgeport’s all-time leader in points scored, assists and steals.

Glenn, playing with four first-year starters, averaged 23.4 points and seven rebounds a game.

It was her game-management skills though, that elevated her to an elite level as she also dished out five assists per game, averaged 4.4 steals and shot 84 percent from the free-throw line.

The only game Bridgeport lost with Glenn in the lineup this season was the University contest. Glenn exited that game at the half with an injury with the Indians leading.

Joining Glenn as a Class AAA first-team player dropping to the Class AA first team was Robert C. Byrd’s Alicia Noble.

The senior forward averaged 15.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and two steals a game and shot 66 percent from the line this season en route to becoming RCB’s all-time leading scorer while leading the Flying Eagles to an 18-5 record.

Two players return to the first team from last season in Westside’s Hope Lester and Tolsia’s Krista Maynard.

Maynard, a junior, averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and 5.5 steals for a Rebels’ squad that finished the season 21-4.

Toman is the top scorer on the first team. The senior guard averaged 23.7 points for the Rebels, who went 13-10, to go with 7.3 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.3 assists.

Barker, a sophomore guard, averaged 13.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 6.7 steals and 6.2 assists while leading the Panthers to a 19-7 record and a berth in the state tournament.

The second team is captained by Westside’s Danielle Brown.

Braxton County’s Hunter Sodaro and Lincoln’s Emily Knight move up from third team to second team this season, while the remainder of the squad includes North Marion’s Anna Marie Moscufo, Liberty Harrison’s Heather Hickman, Fairmont Senior’s Emily Stoller, Sissonville’s Madison Jones and Tolsia’s Savannah Winnett.

Robert C. Byrd’s Sarah Barksdale captain’s the third team, which consists of Clay County’s Brittany Gould, Scott’s Jamie Dotson, Summers County’s Tyra Wynes, Berkeley Springs’ Sarah Haynes, North Marion’s Audia Bartlett, PikeView’s Lyndsey Hatfield and Lincoln’s Hayley Haning.
