The PikeView girls and Summers County boys captured team championships in the Class AA Region 3 track and field meet Friday at UC Stadium’s Laidley Field.
On the girls side, the Panthers tallied 129 points to nip runner-up Liberty (127). The Raiders claimed the meet-concluding 4x400-meter relay but PikeView finished fourth in that race to emerge with the overall triumph.
The Bobcat boys had a slightly easier time of it, scoring 103 points to lead second-place PikeView (87) and the other squads.
Distance runner Katelyn Odle powered the PikeView win. The sophomore crossed the line first in three individual events — 800 (2:43.23), 1600 (6:14.90) and 3200 (14:13.08), as well as anchoring the winning 4x800 relay (teammates were Lauryn Hatfield, Laura Hill and Sophie Klein).
Jasmine Johnson also had an individual win for the PikeView girls. Johnson threw the shot 31 feet, 8 1/2 inches to slip by runner-up Tymara McDowell (31-2 1/4) of Liberty. Johnson was later fourth in the discus, an event won by McDowell (90-1).
Summers County’s Emily Smith was a double-winner, grabbing top honors in the 100 hurdles (16.58) and the long jump (15-10 3/4).
The Summers boys earned their team trophy without the benefit of very many event victories. In fact, only TaRon Ayers (long jump in 19-10 1/2) and Matt Ryan (300 hurdles in 44.99) collected individual crowns for the Bobcats. Summers also posted a win in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:05.98), with Ryan being joined by teammates Jacob Carr, Jack Bonham and T.J. Smith.
PikeView’s Jason Weitzel rang up a distance triple — winning the 800 (2:07.92), 1600 (4:45.88) and 3200 (10:42.21).
Independence’s Zach Fleshman won the discus narrowly over teammate Robbie Cuthbert, 126-10 to 124-04, and Fleshman wound up second in the shot put (41-6) to Westside’s James Adkins (41-11 1/4).
