Tickets moving fast for BAC banquet

Fans hoping to hear Robert Griffin III speak at the Big Atlantic Classic Tip-Off Banquet on Sunday, Jan. 27, will need to act quickly.

The Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center box office is anticipating a sell-out for the event featuring the Washington Redskins quarterback.

Tickets for the banquet are moving fast. As of Saturday night there were still a few dinner packages remaining, but not very many according to a box office representative.

Dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m., with the program featuring RG3 beginning at 1:30 p.m. Tickers for the dinner are $40, while balcony seating for fans just wanting to hear the speaker are available at $7.50 for adults and $2.50 for students. Doors for the balcony seats will open at 1 p.m.

Griffin helped lead the Redskins to a playoff berth this season with a 10-6 record. The Redskins selected Griffin with the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s NFL draft following a Heisman Trophy-winning season with the Baylor Bears that saw Griffin skyrocket in popularity.

He recently underwent a successful operation by famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews to repair his knee, which was reinjured in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC wild-card round of the NFL playoffs.

Tournament director Jim Justice said he expects Griffin’s appearance at the Classic will be one of his first following the surgery.

The annual basketball event will run from Jan. 28 through Feb. 2 and will include boys and girls middle school and high school teams from around the area, including Woodrow Wilson, Westside, Wyoming East, Bluefield and Greenbrier East. There will also be a national game featuring boys power Oak Hill Academy and Montrose Christian.
