No. 2 Warriors face tough stretch

Wyoming East faces No. 1 Bluefield and AAA No. 2 South Charleston

The next two days shape up to be huge for two days for Wyoming East.

They already have the No. 1 seed in Class AA Region 3, Section 1. And a six-game win streak has helped the Warriors rise to No. 2 overall in the latest Class AA poll.

No, it’s not the postseason, but it is going to seem that way when Wyoming East (15-4) hosts Class AA No. 1 (a Class AA Region 3, Section 2 top seed) Bluefield (20-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m. in New Richmond.

On Wednesday, the Warriors  host Class AAA No. 2 (and Class AAA No. 1 until losing the spot Monday) South Charleston (18-3).

So who did Wyoming East coach Chapman tick off in Wyoming County to draw that kind assignment?

Actually, he did it to himself.

“I didn’t know they’d be No. 1,” Chapman  said, noting that it wouldn’t have changed things if he did know. “We knew they would be good. I did it just to challenge our kids. If you win those two games, you’re rolling into the tournament. And if not, you get a pretty good measure of where you are and what you need to do.”

Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Bluefield and Wyoming East have already met this season, and, as before, the game is a matchup between to top two teams in Class AA.

It turned around quickly on Wyoming East, as Bluefield skated to a 73-53 win over the Warriors.

“They played really good, and took us out of some of the things we wanted to do, especially in the second half,” Chapman said. “They are young but they aren’t afraid to come out and compete. They have outstanding shooting ability and they have excellent quickness and guard play.”

Anthony Eades scored 26 points and Lykel Collier had 21 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.

“Defensively, we have to get out and guard their shooters,” Chapman said. “And Collier does a good job running the team.”

Marcus Schofield led Wyoming East with 18 in the first meeting. Luke Campbell had 15 and Taylor Smith 14.

The loss to Bluefield was Wyoming East’s only loss to a Class AA team and the Warriors have only lost twice since then, both times to Class AAA No. 5 Woodrow Wilson, 62-53 and 65-53. The  only other loss was to Class AAA Capital, 67-62 in Charleston in the season opener.

“Other than the Bluefield loss, we really didn’t have a blow out loss and we play the toughest schedule in AA,” Chapman said. “We held our own against Woodrow twice, and we lost the opener to    Capital.”

Bluefield’s only loss was to Class AAA Princeton, 54-53.

As for South Charleston, the Black Eagles have beaten Woodrow Wilson twice while East has the aforementioned losses to Woodrow.

But, South Charleston also lost an overtime affair to Tug Valley, a team that Wyoming East beat in the Class AA Big Atlantic Classic championship game.

I think my team is ready for games like this,” Chapman said. “It’s almost like starting the tournament early. We are a lot better than we were just 10 games ago. I think this team has grown up and improved. But I still don’t think we have peaked yet.”

Big crowds are expected for both games.

“We are looking at these as big games and I think it’s an opportunity,” Chapman said. “It’s not make or break, or lose-and-you’re-done. But they are big games. It’s going to be an interesting couple of days.”
