Woodrow Wilson had a respectable weekend at the WSAZ Invitational, placing seventh at the annual tournament. The Flying Eagles scored 124 points and had five placewinners.
Still, coach Street Sarrett wonders what might have been.
“I was encouraged by it,” Sarrett said, “but I feel it could have been better. We had a few kids who were out. But the kids who were there wrestled hard and placed. They did a good job.”
The Eagles seem to be showing signs of improvement, and at just the right time. Not that the first half of the season was a cakewalk, but the more difficult portion definitely awaits.
It starts today at the two-day West Virginia Duals in Parkersburg. Woodrow will join Shady Spring, ranked No. 8 in Class AAA, in making the trip to one of the state’s most competitive wrestling tournaments.
Also at the event will be host Parkersburg (No. 6 in AAA), Parkersburg South (No. 2), Brooke (No. 9), Calhoun County (No. 8 AA/A), Roane County, Lewis County, Ritchie County, George Washington, Hedgesville, Cabell Midland, Dayton (Ohio) Christian Academy, Cuyahoga Valley (Ohio) Christian Academy and Springboro, Ohio.
“This is our first year going to it,” Sarrett said. “I just thought that at this stage we need to get up there and see Parkersburg and Parkersburg South before the state tournament. Parkersburg South won the last four state championships. That’s the level we want our program to be.”
After the Duals, the Flying Eagles will take part in the Mountain State Athletic Conference Tournament Feb. 2, then the Class AAA Region 3 tournament will be held Feb. 15-16 in Ripley. Woodrow will run into some of the state’s top programs at both events.
Sandwiched between those is a home tri-match with Nicholas County and Class AA/A No. 1 Greenbrier West on Feb. 7.
Placing for the Eagles at the WSAZ were Leland Swafford (sixth, 113 pounds), Josh Lilley (fourth, 120), Jakob Cooper (sixth, 126), Josh Gilger (fifth, 132) and Cole Williams (fourth, 152).
