State prep cheerleading competition on tap today

Local high school cheerleaders will be traveling to Charleston today, hoping to score a win at the state cheerleading competition.

The competition will be held at the Charleston Civic Center starting at 10 a.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for students.

A total of 24 schools will compete, eight from each of the three classes, A, AA, and AAA.

Edie Davis, one of the cheerleading coaches for Fayetteville High School, said this is the sixth consecutive year the school has qualified to compete at the state level.

Until six years ago, Davis said the school had never gone.

“We always hope for a win, but the competition is tough.”

Cheerleading coach for Independence High School, Jane Vass, said their school hasn’t been to the state competition in a few years.

“We placed second in the region. Liberty placed first and the top two from each region get to go.”

She said the girls have been working hard and are excited to show their routine.

“They want to hit all their moves perfectly and put on a good show.”
