Woodrow Wilson gave Oak Hill a rough introduction to the big-school ranks Tuesday, using its size, speed and shooting to defeat the Red Devils 67-12 Tuesday night at the Jim Lilly Center.
“We’re not playing good offense yet, but we get up and down the floor,” Flying Eagles coach Bernie Bostick said. “Only (center) Breanna Thompson and (point guard) Sarah Akers have experience. It’s almost a new team.”
Senior guard Kavita François knocked down three 3-pointers and finished the night with 19 points. Tye Hairston added 12 points, and Akers and Jasha Payne scored nine apiece.
Woodrow led 7-2 early on two baskets by Payne, around a three from François.
After the Oak Hill’s Jordan McDonald hit one of two foul shots, the Flying Eagles erupted for 17 consecutive points, including another 3 by François.
The even-younger Red Devils’ inexperience at working together was showing.
“We lost our entire starting lineup from last year,” Red Devils’ first-year coach Justin Hough said. “(Forward) Jordan McDonald and (guard) Alyssa Barron returned, but they had maybe three minutes on the court together as freshmen.”
The second quarter was no better for the Red Devils. McDonald’s lay-up at the 6:14 mark was Oak Hill’s only points of the quarter.
Woodrow led 42-5 at the half and coasted to the win.
“We’re playing good defense, and that’s going to hold us for a while,” Bostick said. “I feel good about this team. There are no stars. Sometimes when you have stars, the others stand around, waiting for the stars to do something, and if they don’t, you lose.”
The Flying Eagles outrebounded the Red Devils 37-19, and had a 21-5 in steals. Many Woodrow baskets came in transition.
“We have to get our shots however we can, and if it’s in transition, that’s fine,” Bostick said. “Our biggest problem is our bigs are not in shape. They get tired and then they don’t make free throws.
“After Breanna, they’re all pretty even and bring something for the game.
Thompson brought down nine rebounds and Payne had five.
Akers scored on three of her five steals. François had four steals, scoring on two.
Post player Kaitlyn Goodman led Oak Hill with seven points. McDonald had eight rebounds.
“The good thing is the girls had heart and hustled all game,” Hough said. “We’ve definitely improved since our scrimmage game.
“It’s a learning experience, but we’re going to keep going. The girls are keeping their heads up. They’re learning, and I’m learning.”
Oak Hill hosts Valley Thursday. Woodrow plays Friday at Huntington.
