The Upper Deck Middle School League takes center stage for most of spring at Linda K. Epling Stadium, but next week could be deemed College Week at the Beckley venue.
Starting with Tuesday’s West Virginia Conference battle between Concord and Fairmont State, Epling Stadium will host five college games in six days. Regular visitor Marshall will host Ohio Wednesday, then West Virginia will host Big 12 opponent Kansas for a three-game weekend series.
Admission to the Concord and Marshall games is $5. Tickets for each WVU-Kansas game are $9 at the gate.
Concord (25-16, 20-7) goes into this weekend’s series against West Liberty in second place in the South Division trailing leader West Virginia State with a ranking of 148.89. State checks in at 151.25.
The Mountain Lions are led in hitting by freshman Joe Camp, who is hitting .404 and has driven in 25 runs. Joey Miller has 10 home runs, 11 doubles and 50 RBIs, but is striking out once every five at-bats.
Doing the bulk of the starting pitching have been Ryan Weatherholtz (2-1. 4.26 ERA), Tyler Coyle (4-4. 5.32), Devin Smith (1-3, 9.00) and Drew Spear (0-3. 11.39).
Among those on the Fairmont roster are Shady Spring alumni Corey Lilly and Tyler Lucas and Greenbrier West graduate Chase Fitzwater.
Lilly has 2-3 record and 6.62 ERA. Lucas, a senior, has thrown just seven innings in three appearances. Fitzwater doesn’t have an official at-bat but has scored twice.
Concord and Fairmont (16-19, 12-12) will play in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
Marshall’s game against rival Ohio will start at 3 p.m.
The WVU-Kansas series will start Friday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. Game 2 will start at 4 p.m. and the series finale at 1 p.m.
