NEW RICHMOND —
Donte Nabors comes from Beckley basketball royalty. On Tuesday night, he made Wyoming East’s gym his court.
The 5-foot-10 junior scored 28 points, including two baskets from beyond the arc, as he led the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles to an 82-56 victory over the Warriors of Wyoming East in Beckley’s season opener.
“I just got the ball and kept on shooting,” Nabors said after the game. “I just got on fire.”
Beckley (1-0) was out to a hot 7-0 run early in the first when Nabors knocked down a pair of buckets and senior point guard Andrew Johnson hit a 3-pointer from the corner. Wyoming East (1-1) found itself in the hole early as senior Brett Bowling and junior Josh Tunstalle got in foul trouble in the first quarter when they each picked up two fouls.
Woodrow wasn’t able to capitalize, going only 4-for-11 from the charity stripe in the first quarter and 12-for-27 on the game.
The Warriors came back firing in the second quarter, going on an 8-2 run, and even tying the game at 26-all when freshman Cody Lester picked off an errant Woodrow pass and put it in the basket. It would be short-lived, as Nabors would add 8 more points to give the Eagles a 35-24 lead at the half.
The second half saw the Warriors and Eagles trade blows for the momentum. Wyoming East’s big-man duo of Bowling and freshman Lester combined for 30 points, but Woodrow’s stingy defense would be too much. Nabors added 16 more points of his own as the Eagles pulled away and cruised to victory.
“I don’t want to talk about our offense,” Wyoming East coach Rory Chapman said. “Their defense took us out of what we wanted to do today. It was just one of those things when were outplayed in every aspect of the game. When the ball got rolling down hill we didn’t stop it.”
“We’re proud of our kids, but we still got a lot of stuff to work on,” Woodrow coach Ron Kidd said. “We’ve got to work on foul shots and take advantage of that. Anytime you can come down here and play a quality team like Wyoming East and get a win is a good thing, though.”
Wyoming East travels to take on Class AA Independence on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will attempt to avenge last season’s loss as they travel to Hurricane on Dec. 18. Tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
