Revenge is a dish best served hot, even when the conditions outside say otherwise.
On a cold and snowy night in South Charleston, No. 3 Woodrow Wilson (17-4) got revenge for an early season loss by knocking off the No. 2 South Charleston Black Eagles (19-2) 77-60 to win its first-ever Mountain State Athletic Conference championship.
“It’s a great win. They beat us in Beckley; we just owed them some revenge,” Beckley’s Andrew Johnson said. He had 16 points.
“I thought we played extremely good defense; I think we came down here with something to prove,” Beckley coach Ron Kidd added.
Prove it they did.
Beckley never trailed in the game, jumping out to an early lead on the back of its high pressure defense and transition offense.
Woodrow leading scorer Donte Nabors made his case for player of the year by putting up 25 points in the victory.
“We just came out here with a lot of intensity; we had it on our head we had to come down here and beat them,” Nabors said.
Nabors had 17 points in the first half but went cold. That’s when Andrew Johnson and Chase Hancock stepped up to help sustain the lead.
“They stepped it up,” Kidd said. “Anytime those three step up, and NeQuan and Brent did a good job for us on the glass, it’s a good win.”
The win marked 13 in a row for the Flying Eagles, who are arguably the hottest team in the state right now.
It was Beckley’s first game since beating Wyoming East on Monday night. The near week off seemed to help the Flying Eagles.
“I thought we needed the rest to get our legs back,” Kidd said. “I thought our kids had our legs tonight.”
At halftime of the game, Kidd was honored as the MSAC boys’ coach of the year. After the game, the normally quiet coach showed some emotion when speaking on the honor.
“I want to thank the other coaches and the parents, they’re the ones who vote on it,” Kidd said. “It’s a community thing. “You get your assistant coaches and everyone. I appreciate it.”
His players felt the honor was well deserved.
“It means a lot; we’re bringing things back to Beckley and he’s doing that,” Nabors said.
Beckley will play its final regular season game Thursday night when it travels to Oak Hill.

WVU baseball team helps tornado victims
West Virginia University head baseball coach Randy Mazey was having lunch at an Oklahoma City restaurant Monday afternoon, keeping a close watch on the television set.
With every passing minute, the tornado that devastated the Oklahoma town of Moore, was moving closer and closer to his location and its path was being documented by a local television station. At one point, the coach even looked out the window to see if he could see the approaching funnel. -
