HUNTINGTON —
Marshall begins its men’s basketball season at 7 p.m. today with an exhibition against Bluefield (Va.) College at Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last season’s 21-14 team that made an appearance in the NIT for the first time since 1988. Among those returners is junior DeAndre Kane, a preseason All-Conference USA first-team selection, who led the team with 16.5 points per game. Marshall also returns its leading rebounder, senior forward Dennis Tinnon (10.0 per game).
Tinnon is one of three seniors on the team, as forward Robert Goff returns after starting 33 of 35 games last season. Also back is center Nigel Spikes, who became a consistent contributor last season after missing the first six games due to injury.
Newcomers Kareem Canty, Austin Loop, Tamron Manning, Elijah Pittman and D.D. Scarver will don a Marshall jersey for the first time.
Bluefield College, an NAIA Division I program, returns three starters from last season’s team which went 19-16 overall and finished third in the Mid-South Conference.
Like the Herd, the Rams also return a senior forward and junior guard. Bluefield is led by last season’s conference player of the year, Byron Carpenter. The senior center averaged 21.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Junior guard Kearsten Marion averaged 16.7 points along with 3.6 assists.
“We are looking forward to (the game) because that gives our guys a very good sense of where we are,” Rams coach Richard Morgan said. “You can’t put much stock in those exhibition games. (Marshall’s) guys may not even play hard, I don’t know.”
Tickets for the exhibition are $5 and all seating is general admission. Tickets can be purchased by going to HerdZone.com or by calling 800-THE-HERD.
The game can be viewed online via Herd All-Access by going to HerdZone.com. This will be the only game of the season that will be free of charge. A Herd All-Access subscription for the season is $9.95 per month or $79.95 for one year.
