Cavaliers ranked 1st, with lots of company

BECKLEY — Greenbrier West has finally scaled to the top of the state coaches rankings in wrestling, but the Cavaliers have some company. In fact, it’s downright crowded.

West is one of six teams to tie for the No. 1 ranking in Class AA/A, according to the latest poll released on wvmat.com. The others are East Fairmont, Clay County, Wirt County, Fairmont Senior and North Marion.

East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior and North Marion were all AAA schools last season.

The Cavaliers have won championships their last four times out. The streak was extended at the WSAZ Invitational last weekend; they didn’t win the overall title — that went to AAA No. 1 Huntington — but West did finish second and was crowned the Class AA/A champion.

Greenbrier West will visit Greenbrier East for the Greenbrier Dual at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Also, Independence is ranked seventh in the latest poll. The Patriots, who will compete in the Bob Zide Rumble in Williamson this Saturday, placed ninth at the WSAZ.

In Class AAA, Shady Spring retained its No. 8 ranking. The Tigers were third at the WSAZ and will wrestle in the West Virginia Duals in Parkersburg on Friday and Saturday.
