Big Reds ground Flying Eagles 65-57

BECKLEY — Woodrow Wilson is known for its defensive prowess.

Saturday night, the Flying Eagles didn’t even have that going for them.

On a night that Beckley would induct three former players into its hall of fame, it was Parkersburg that would be known for tenacious D. The Eagles lost on Dave Barksdale Court for the second time this week, 65-57 to the Big Reds. It is only the second win of the season for the Wood County team.

Beckley started out well early, with the junior duo of Donte Nabors and Chase Hancock accounting for 16 of Woodrow’s 18 points in the first quarter, including a rare four-point play from Hancock. The patented aggressive Woodrow defense would hold Parkersburg to only 10 points.

However, it would be the only time in the game that the Flying Eagles would outscore the Big Reds.

Beckley’s shooting went cold in the second quarter, with two field goals from Nabors being the only baskets scored from the floor.

Parkersburg would begin to cut into the lead, when Braeden Cabbil hit a clutch 3-pointer as time expired in the second quarter. Beckley only led 29-27 at the half.

The Big Reds came alive in the third quarter, tying the game on an Adrian Webster layup.

Nabors wasn’t going to let Woodrow go down easily, scoring nine of Woodrow’s 11 points in the quarter, including a 3-pointer and following up with a layup of his own.

The tide would turn in favor of Parkersburg when senior guard Andrew Beyer hit a stand-up jumper from 10 feet to give his team the lead for the first time of the night. Levi Hays later hit a 3 to give the Big Reds a 41-40 lead.

Woodrow’s cold shooting continued in the fourth quarter. Brent Osborne missed two open 3-pointers off the back of the rim. Hancock went 2-for-6 from the line. Nabors, who up until the fourth quarter had 21 points, only touched the ball three times.

Meanwhile, Trevor Britton added 9 points of his own to help give the Big Reds the victory.

Britton led Parkersburg with 28 points.

Nabors finished with 25 points for Woodrow.

It is only the second win this season for the Big Reds, who were defeated Friday night by St. Albans 55-52.

The Flying Eagles fall to 4-2 on the season and will next play Tuesday night as they try to right the ship at home by welcoming in a 6-1 South Charleston team that is fresh off of a 69-62 overtime victory over Capital on Friday night. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Woodrow Wilson head coach Ron Kidd declined comment following the game.
