Herd tramples Eagles

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Maybe the oddsmakers will think twice before making a Marshall an underdog to a winless team.

Kevin Grooms ran for two touchdowns, Rakeem Cato passed for three more on another 300-yard night and the Thundering Herd walloped Southern Miss 59-24 Saturday at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

The Golden Eagles were three-point favorites despite not having a win this season under first-year coach Ellis Johnson.

Cato completed 31 of 42 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, two to former high school teammate Tommy Shuler. Cato, who also threw an interception that was returned 19 yards for a touchdown by Kalan Reed, was replaced in the fourth quarter by Blake Frohnapfel with the Herd (3-4, 2-1 Conference USA) leading 45-17.

Shuler had 11 catches for 111 yards.

Grooms finished his night with 119 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. His 64-yard touchdown answered Reed’s return in the second quarter.

Marshall finished with 629 yards of offense, 275 on the ground.

The loss guaranteed Southern Miss (0-7, 0-3) its first losing season since 1995.

The Herd will return home Saturday to host Big East-bound Central Florida. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
