The newest class of the Woodrow Wilson High School Football Hall of Fame took its place Friday night prior to the Flying Eagles’ 35-34 win over Hurricane.
Six new members were enshrined, after a dinner Thursday night.
Woodrow Wilson head coach John H. Lilly, who coached each of the new members, said the Hall of Fame, started by legendary Flying Eagles coach Jerome Van Meter, is a special honor.
“It’s the biggest tradition within our program,” said Lilly. “It’s very unique, and there are some great players that are part of the group.”
Micah Carter — The runner up for the Hunt Award, which recognizes the state’s top lineman, Carter was a two-time all-state lineman and a two-time all-Mountain State Athletic Conference pick in 2005 and 2006. At the conclusion of his Woodrow Wilson career, he received a Division I scholarship to play at Marshall.
Brandon Gravely — A first team all-state linebacker, Gravely was on both the 2000 and 2001 Woodrow Wilson playoff teams. He led the team in tackles as a senior and played four years of baseball at Delaware State following his Flying Eagle career.
Marcus Manns — A first team all-state selection in both football and basketball in 2006, Manns helped take Woodrow Wilson to the football playoffs and the basketball state tournament in the same season. He finished as the career leader in both rushing and scoring, records he still holds.
Larry Patterson — The fullback on the 1999 Woodrow Wilson playoff team, Patterson was a three-year starter and a team captain for coach Lilly’s Flying Eagles.
James Singleton — The leading rusher in the 2001 Woodrow Wilson playoff team, Singleton was a team captain his senior season. He was also an all-state and all-MSAC selection.
Jason Slay — The quarterback of the 2002 Flying Eagles’ playoff squad, Slay led his team to the playoffs in three straight seasons. He continued his athletic career at West Virginia State, where he played basketball, and he’s currently an assistant basketball coach at Hargrave Military Academy.
