Mac’s Toy Fund coming together

Santa’s sleigh is en route, piled high with toys for nearly 4,500 families invited to Saturday’s 82nd Annual Mac’s Toy Fund distribution party.

Each year, the Beckley-Raleigh Convention Center main floor looks more like a toy workshop as each child served picks out one new toy, one used toy, a coat and fruit. Many will also receive a refurbished bike and helmet or a handcrafted wooden toy.

Mac’s Toy Fund is made possible by community support, those who volunteer the day of the party as well as those who donate used toys and money to the fund.

This year Allen Sargent and Dale Brady of Magnum Car Wash in Beckley teamed up with Bill Roop of Roop and Smith Law Offices to buy 20 new bikes.

Beckley attorney Stephen P. New again donated 300 bike helmets to be distributed with bikes refurbished by Boy Scout Troop 103.

Mac’s Toy Fund vice president Pete Torrico transported toys Thursday donated to the fund through the 2nd annual Create a Dream Tree For Kids holiday gift drive at The Greenbrier. They will join other toys purchased locally and the wooden ones handmade at the Federal Correctional Institution - Beckley.

Monetary donations to Mac’s Toy Fun will be accepted through the end of the year.

To make a monetary donation to Mac’s Toy Fund, mail checks to Mac’s Toy Fund, P.O. Box 2398, Beckley, WV 25802.

Anyone interested in volunteering at Saturday’s distribution party should arrive at the convention center by around 7:30 or 8 a.m.

Invitations to the distribution event are sent out by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services; postage is paid by the toy fund.
