NWS issues winter weather warnings, advisories

Some parts of region could see up to 8 inches of snow through Sunday

BECKLEY — Winter weather is here at last, bringing with it up to 8 inches of snow in some parts of southern West Virginia, according to the National Weather Service.

Greenbrier County is under a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Sunday with 5 to 8 inches of snow expected. Higher elevations in the northwestern part of the county will bear the brunt, receiving the largest amounts.

Meteorologist William Perry says Summers and Monroe counties are under a winter weather advisory through tonight, with up to 5 inches of accumulation expected.

“Definitely be alert to the roads. It will be slick in spots. Allow more time to get to your destination and stay home if you can,” Perry said.

Raleigh County is under a winter weather advisory as well, with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected.

Snow is expected to taper off this morning, but temperatures will remain in the mid-20s throughout the day.

Wind chill for tonight into Sunday morning will be zero to 10 below, especially on the higher ridges.
