Brrrr! Extreme wind chills anticipated

BECKLEY — Charleston and Blacksburg offices of the National Weather Service have issued a wind chill advisory in effect through noon today.

This advisory covers Raleigh, Fayette, Mercer, Summers, Monroe and Greenbrier counties.

Temperatures around Raleigh and Fayette counties are expected to be as low as 6 to 12 degrees with wind chill nearing 10 below.

Wind is expected to be between 10 and 15 miles per hour with gusts up to 25.

Temperatures across Mercer, Summers, Monroe and Greenbrier counties are expected to be in the teens with wind chills reaching 8 below and wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour.

According to the National Weather Service, cold temperatures and strong wings can result in frost bite and could lead to hypothermia.

They advise staying indoors and warm if possible. If residents must go outside, the National Weather Service suggests wearing several layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing as trapped air between layers provides additional insulation.

If working outside, be sure to remove layers as needed to avoid sweating, which can cause chill and increase the potential for hypothermia.

The weather service also reminds residents to wear a hat and cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.

In addition, cold weather can cause extra strain on your heart, which has to work overtime in cold weather. The NWS cautions those at risk of heart attack to avoid hard labor outside in cold weather.

Temperatures tonight are expected to be around 8 degrees with slightly warmer weather on Wednesday with a high near 24.

Temperatures will get slightly warmer with snow forecast later in the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday will have a high near 29 and a 50 percent chance of snow overnight.

Snow is likely on Friday with a 70 percent chance of precipitation and highs around 32.
