Beckley Little League’s annual sale begins Friday

Baseball season is still several months away, but this holiday season Christmas trees can help make the spring and summer months a little more fun for Beckley Little League players. The league’s annual sale begins Friday in the Little League parking lot near the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

For approximately the last 15 years, the Little League has been selling the trees to raise money to purchase safety equipment, uniforms and other supplies, explained Jim Justice, president of Beckley Little League. He said this Little League does not require children’s families to pay entry fees, therefore any child, regardless of his or her family income can play the sport.  

Most of the Fraiser firs that will be sold are grown in Willis, Va., a prime location because of its 3,500 foot elevation, Justice said. Prices of the Christmas trees vary.

“I’d love for everyone to come buy one,” Justice said. “It goes to a good cause.”

Other than the fact that a live Christmas tree gives a fragrant aroma during the holiday season, these trees will help ensure children who play baseball and T-ball have the proper equipment as they build character; understand the meaning of being a part of a team; and enable them to a good activity during the spring and summer months, Justice explained.

Justice estimates that the Christmas tree sale will raise around $8,000 for the Little League, but the costs of providing for each child exceeds that amount; and, anyone who would like to make an additional donation to the Little League may do so.

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
